Prepare the information needed for a clear Australian business invoice.

Last reviewed 2 October 2026

Before you start

This worksheet is a draft, not an automatically compliant invoice. Confirm whether you are GST registered and use current ATO requirements before sending.

Why use this?

Clear details, payment terms and the right invoice type reduce avoidable disputes and delays.

When should I use it?

Complete when a sale or milestone is ready to bill.

What will it tell me?

Missing customer details, unclear descriptions or terms may delay approval and payment.

Work through the steps

Each prompt explains what to enter. The example is a guide, not a target for your business.

Are you registered for GST? Record the correct invoice type, legal trading name, ABN and contact details.

If not GST registered, label it Invoice, not Tax invoice, and do not add GST.

Record buyer identity, purchase order or job reference, invoice number and issue date.

Customer: ABC Pty Ltd; PO 481; invoice 1042; issued 2 October.

Describe each item, quantity, price and total. If GST applies, check tax invoice information with ATO guidance.

Repair service: 2 hours; parts: 1 unit; total shown clearly.

State due date, accepted payment method and bank details verified through a secure process.

Due 16 October by bank transfer; verify changes to bank details by phone.

Record who approved the bill, when it was sent and when to follow up if unpaid.

Sent to accounts@customer; reminder scheduled two days after due date.
