Starting a business

Most new Australian businesses need a handful of registrations before they trade, and the order matters. Your structure (sole trader, partnership, company or trust) decides which registrations apply, how you pay tax and who is personally responsible for the business's debts.

The registrations themselves are free when you apply through the official government services. An ABN comes from the Australian Business Register, companies are registered with ASIC and receive an ACN, and every company director needs a director ID from Australian Business Registry Services. GST registration depends on your turnover.

These guides explain each step in plain English and link straight to the official service, so you can do it yourself or know what to ask your accountant.

Should I be a sole trader or a company?

A sole trader is simple and low-cost, but you are personally liable for all business debts. A company is a separate legal entity with limited liability for members, but it costs more to set up and run and brings more reporting and director duties.
