Find professional help

Use these official registers and professional body directories to find an accountant, tax agent, bookkeeper or adviser, or to check that someone you already use is registered.

Government registers show who is legally registered, for example with the Tax Practitioners Board or ASIC. Professional body directories list members who have chosen to be listed, so they may not include everyone. Not sure who you need? Read what type of accountant or adviser your business needs.

Accountant

An accountant can analyse your business finances, prepare financial statements and help you make financial decisions, such as choosing a structure, expanding or meeting reporting obligations. Many accountants are also registered tax agents or BAS agents.

What to check: Check their professional body membership and public practice certificate, and check the TPB register if they will charge you for tax or BAS work.

Registered tax agent

A registered tax agent can prepare and lodge your tax return and BAS, tell you about the tax laws that apply to your business, and deal with the ATO on your behalf.

What to check: Only a registered tax agent can charge a fee for tax agent services, so check they are listed as a tax agent with the Tax Practitioners Board.

Registered BAS agent

A registered BAS agent can prepare and give advice on your BAS, covering areas such as GST, PAYG withholding and the super guarantee. A BAS agent can't help with your tax return.

What to check: Anyone who provides BAS services for a fee must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board, so check they are listed as a BAS agent or tax agent.

Bookkeeper

A bookkeeper keeps track of your day-to-day transactions in accounting software, and may look after banking, invoices, payment collection, payroll and cash-flow monitoring.

What to check: If a bookkeeper will prepare or lodge your BAS, or do payroll work that applies a tax law, check they are registered as a BAS agent with the Tax Practitioners Board.

Financial adviser

A financial adviser can give you personal advice on investments, superannuation and life insurance, and help you set financial goals and a plan to reach them.

What to check: Check the adviser is on the Moneysmart financial advisers register, which also shows their qualifications, the products they can advise on and any bans.

Registered liquidator, restructuring practitioner or bankruptcy trustee

A registered liquidator handles formal insolvency appointments for companies, and an eligible company with total liabilities of no more than $1 million may appoint a small business restructuring practitioner to help prepare a restructuring plan. Registered bankruptcy trustees deal with personal insolvency.

What to check: Only a registered liquidator can act as a small business restructuring practitioner, so check ASIC's register of liquidators, and check AFSA's register for bankruptcy trustees.

Lawyer

A lawyer can help you understand the laws that apply to your business and advise you on legal problems, such as a dispute or a statutory demand.

What to check: The Law Council of Australia says you can find a lawyer by contacting your state or territory law society.

Free government help

business.gov.au's adviser finder connects you with government-supported business advisers, many of whom offer free or low-cost advice. The Small Business Ombudsman (ASBFEO) can help if you're in a dispute with another business or an Australian Government agency.

What to check: These are government services, so there is no registration to check.
